Initial failure maps for ceramic and metal matrix
composite laminates

Abstract
Initial failure maps are constructed for symmetric laminated plates
under in-plane uniform overall stresses and uniform changes in
temperature. A micromechanical analysis is outlined for evaluation of
local stresses in fibrous composite laminates, with inelastic phases
modeled by any physically admissible constitutive relation that conforms
with the additive decomposition of small total strains. The applied
loading history reflects the processing conditions, cooling to room
temperature, and subsequent reheating to service temperatures. The local
stress maxima are compared with allowable local strength magnitudes, and
plotted as branches of the failure maps in the overall stress space.
Examples are presented for selected ceramic and metal matrix systems.
