Abstract
A simple macromechanics based strategy is used to arrive at the
description of consolidation of clayey soils. In particular, an
isotropic consolidation, as a tool for inferring the basic material
parameters of various phenomenological models, is discussed here in
conjunction with the modified CAM clay model. The paper shows a rather
poor ability of the classical CAM clay model to characterize the
process of consolidation. In view of this shortcoming, two principal
modifications to the existing CAM clay model are proposed to
improve the mechanical modeling of clayey soils. A number of examples
are presented to evaluate applicability of the improved model.
